SEMINAR
Jutland: International highway or national periphery?
Speaker: Richard Jenkins, Sociologist, University of Sheffield and author of the book "Being Danish: Paradoxes of Identity in Everyday Life"
This illustrated lecture examines, in a historical context, the place of Jutland within the historical narrative of Denmark. One the one hand, it has been seen as det mørke Jylland, a benighted and backward periphery; on the other, it has been the repository and source of all the true Danish virtues...whatever they are! In this lecture, Richard Jenkins will look at the shifting nature of centre and periphery in Denmark over the last 2000 years, and critically examine the role of historical perspective in notions of 'centre' and 'periphery'. The lecture is open to the public and in English.

TRANSNATIONAL AND TRANS-BORDER RELATIONS IN EUROPE: A unity in diversity?
Partners: University of Flensburg (Prof. Dr. Charlotte Gaitanides) and Willy Brandt Centre at the University of Wrocław (Prof. Dr. Krzysztof Ruchniewicz)
The very idea of European integration is inspired by the potentials of ‘unity in diversity’. Life and work spaces are increasingly transnational and intercultural. Non-discrimination is a central element of EU law and politics and an underlying precondition for its inherent dynamics. The aim of the seminar is to create a better understanding of the social and economic potentials of ‘diversity’ in trans-border relations in Europe. We will debate crucial elements of the concept, analyze the state of anti-discrimination law and politics in border regions and discuss the development of transnational spaces in Europe within the regional policy and the foreign policy“.

Workshop: Industrial Clusters: Challenges for Management and Public Policy
12 June 2012, 09.00 – 16.00, M403, Alsion, Sønderborg
The workshop is related to a special issue on a topic within the Management Revue. The workshop addresses cluster-researchers and cluster managers that can report experiences and help to make aware of typical advantages and problems.
During the workshop we will discuss firm clusters in an adequately broad and interdisciplinary way. We are particularly interested in questions such as:
• What makes a cluster a cluster? What kinds of clusters are to be found in the industry?
• What theoretical framework can explain the development of clusters?
• What kind of opportunities and what kind of risks are going along with being a cluster member?
• What are the consequences for the management of clusters from the web as well as from the public policy level?
• What are the concepts and implications for the management of clusters on the different level?
