The Research training program in Biology (RETBIO) provides training within the key areas researched at the Institute of Biology (BI). The students within this research training program engage in experimental biology on topics ranging from microorganisms to ecosystems, with an overall emphasis on aquatic biology. There are four main research areas with the graduate school, namely Geobiology, Aquatic Ecology, Ecotoxicology and Environmental Stress, and Acoustic Communication and Behaviour.
The Research Training Program (RETBIO) coordinates and organises national and international Ph.D. courses, workshops and guest lectures within experimental biology. It also supports research visits of international students coming from Europe, the USA and elsewhere. The program obtains Ph.D. scholarships from national and international research foundations and in collaboration with governmental institutions and private companies. One important aim of RETBIO is to facilitate networking between the students and both national and international scientists. Networking occurs as scientists visit our institute and laboratories, participate in meetings, and most importantly, conduct their research partly in national and international laboratories outside of SDU.
Organisation
Leader: Professor Ronnie N. Glud
Secretary: Lone Nørgaard Bruun
The Research Training Program (RETBIO) is headed by Professor Ronnie N. Glud. He is supported administratively by Lone Nørgaard Bruun, who carries out the daily administration of registered doctoral students. General administration of doctoral projects under RETBIO (eg. evaluation of applications, approval of study plans, applications for mobility, education, and communication activities) is carried out by the PhD committee at BI. This committee consists of three members (the leader of RETBIO and two VIPs) and reports to the PhD School at the Faculty of Science. RETBIO is based on four ares of biological research: geobiology, aquatic ecology, environmental stress, and acoustic communication and behaviour. Each of these research areas offers qualified PhD guidance and a range of PhD training and networking activities. Each research area is staffed by up to 6 researchers at lecturer level or above, which ensures a qualified PhD guidance in relevant policy areas. The organisation of individual doctoral projects is harmonised within the PhD School at the Faculty of Science according to the rules currently in force.
