The Institute of Biology, University of Southern Denmark has a field station at Søgårdlejren near Kliplev in the Southern part of Jutland. It is possible for upper secondary schools to rent the field station for short excursions and study tours.
Location
The field station is placed in beautiful locations in Søgårdlejren with a view to St. Søgård Lake. Søgaardlejren is also used by The Danish Home Guard. The University of Southern Denmark has rented a 260 square meter building in which the field station is placed.
St. Søgård Lake is placed at the end of the lawn belonging to the field station. The lake is a part of the national surveillance program and rapports have been made about the lake by the earlier Sønderjyllands Amt. The surveillance is now carried out by Naturstyrelsen, Ribe.
The lake is eutrophic and therefore well fitted for measuring the production of plankton with the oxygen method. The lake is not always stratified but often it will be possible to measure good oxygen and temperature gradients in the 6.6 meter deep basin.
Some kilometers north of the camp you can find Lake Hostrup (for further information see this) At Lake Hostrup you can sometimes see white-tailed eagles.
The field station is placed at Søgård Forest which belongs to Gråsten Forest District. The forest district has made a folder with walking tours in the forest. You can also find a little raised bog with a little brown colored lake in the forest. Only a couple of kilometers from the field station you can find Søgård Bog. Søgård Bog is a preserved heather bog with a rich bird life. If you are interested in reading more about Søgård Bog please see this. Also the forests at Aabenraa and Frøslev plantation are both within reach from the field station.
