The Department of Biology (BI) at SDU conducts research and provides courses in various topics, primarily at whole-organ, organism and ecosystem levels. Our three major research foci are: Environmental Stress, Sound Communication and Behaviour, Ecology, Evolutionary Biodemography and NordCEE. Teaching covers a significantly broader swathe of experimental biology and encompasses all of the basic biological disciplines.
Established in 1973, the Department of Biology has had more than 600 Masters students graduate. Graduates have found employment in a wide range of companies and corporations, governmental as well as private. Though most graduates have been experimental biologists, in recent years many have combined traditional biological subjects with courses in communicating science to the public through modern media. This special combination is an important trademark of the Department of Biology at SDU. The current academic regulations further enable a specialization in various combinations of subjects not only from within the Faculty of Natural Sciences but also from outside, for example BI courses combined with courses from the Faculty of Humanities or the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences. In this way a whole new range of possibilities is created.
