MD, Kirsten Avlund has accepted a Professorship MSO (with focus on Aging Research) in Gerontology, at the Social Medicine Section, Department of Public Health, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen. She is thus the first Professor in Gerontology at the University of Copenhagen.
Kirsten Avlund, originally educated as Occupational therapist, has since 1984, investigated factors which influence a good functionality in old age, with a special focus on fatigue, being an early sign of aging.
Future research
The future research of Kirsten Avlund is supported by two large grants of a total of 19.5 million Danish kroner from the Velux Fond, and she is now in the process of gathering new data for the new and large Biobank “Copenhagen Aging and Midlife Biobank” (CAMP).
The Biobank will contain information about middle-aged individuals, who have all been followed from childhood. This will establish a future basis for numerous gerontological projects, about what role the social, mental and health factors in childhood and adolescence play in premature aging – and what role biological and social factors in midlife play for the aging process in senior citizens.
