Bio systems and biomass technology:
Both the institutes at the Faculty of Engineering and the ones at the Faculty of Science have developed strong competences in this field of research, something which creates a unique interdisciplinary synergy.
The area include, among other things, resource optimisation and environmental optimisation of glass houses, mechanical weed treatment in agriculture, use of robots, resource optimisation and environmental optimisation of stables and technology for manure treatment, bio energy systems and bio refineries as well as the fundamental understanding of the cycling of elements and the environmental effects on agriculture and in biological systems.

Re-establishment of realgrass in estuaries and coastal waters
Energy systems and energy-using systems and products: The centre focuses on the efficiency improvement of energy consumption per system and functional output, including the utilisation of the energy elasticity of production processes for a dynamic management of the energy consumption as well as management of the production-electricity consumption interaction.

Housing systems:
Energy optimisation and environmental optimisation of housing, household appliances (e.g. refrigeration, freezing, laundering, drying, cooking, cleaning, etc.) and household processes.
Waste systems and resource recycling:
Energy optimisation and environmental optimisation of waste management focussing on recycling of functionality, materials, resources and energy in waste flows.

University of Southern Denmark has special competences in production and product chains in the textile industry, biotechnological industry, and paper industry as well as in water based processes and water treatment in general.
Assessment and prediction of the effect of new technologies on the external environment: The centre comprises some of the country’s most experienced researchers in assessment of the effect of nutrients and environmentally injurious substances on the external environment (soil, groundwater, streams, lakes and the sea). Dynamic prediction models as well as environmental engineering solutions to pollution problems are central in this context.
