Based on a grant from the Carlsberg Foundation the project started on September the 1st 2008 to be completed in the autumn of 2014. The aim is to develop a comprehensive, in-depth analysis of the legislation on social welfare during the period from the mid 18th century until today placing the legislative activity in an ideological and socio-structural context.
Three members of the Centre for Welfare State Research and 4 external researchers are affiliated with the project. The analysis will be reported in six monographs of which the first and second have been published.

- Towards the state of social assistance (1750-1898)
- Between discretion and rights (1898-1933)
- The welfare state in the melting pot (1933-1957)
- The welfare state in the days of her glory (1957-1973)
- The welfare state in crisis (1973-1992)
- What is the welfare state coming to (1992-2012)
