Prerequisites: MECH1, ESY, EPHYS, ELEC, INANO, WAQ, SURF
Upon completion of this course the students will be able to explain basics of interaction between light and surfaces or interfaces. They will know in which way optics can be used to investigate surfaces and interfaces with nanotechnological importance. They will understand the difference between linear and nonlinear optics and how lasers allow one to decipher unprecedented detail of morphology and dynamics of nanoscaled systems. They will be able to explain methods to overcome the diffraction limit and they will understand the importance of the optical near field.
Advanced knowledge of how to use photonics methods in nanotechnology is required. The student needs background knowledge in order to identify appropriate optical methods for solving specific problems arising at nanoscaled interfaces.

At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to
- understand specific properties of surfaces and interfaces
- understand linear and nonlinear optical characterisation methods for nano films
- identify appropriate advanced microscopies to deduce morphologies at interfaces
- validate whether the nanoscaled system asks for far or near field optical methodologies
Oral exam: Danish 7 mark scale, internal examiner; examination protocol required

Examination is based on content of lectures.
