Public seminar with Lindsay Cohn, University of Northern Iowa, USA
In november 2012, violence between Israel and the Hamas-led Gaza strip flared up once again. A key event was Israel taking out Ahmad Jabari, military leader of Hamas, during a tentative truce. The killing of Jabari is a recent example of the use of targeted killings - either by of drone or aircraft strikes - in the war on terror.
The United States also employs this tactic, killing Al Qaeda notables Abu Musab al-Zaqawi and Anwar al-Awlaki in Iraq 2006 and Yemen 2010, respectively. Likewise, the extensive US use of drone strikes in Afghanistan and northern Pakistan also provide numerous examples, and targeted killings remain a debated issue due to their alleged inherent human rights violations and various legal and moral complications.
Therefore, The Center for War Studies hosts a seminar with Lindsay Cohn, assistant professor of political science from the University of Northern Iowa, on the topic of the legality of targeted killings with focus on US security policy and drone strikes. The seminar takes place on:
Friday, February 8th from 1 pm – 3 pm in meeting room M at the Department of Political Science, SDU
It is free of charge and open to everyone - no registration needed. A short introduction to the topic is Uri Friedman’s “Targeted Killings: A short history”, from the sep/oct 2012 issue of the Foreign Policy magazine and the New York Times piece “Do drone undermine democracy?”
They should be available here:
We look forward to seeing you!
