The Biomedical Laboratory is the central animal facility of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Odense University Hospital. The laboratory is situated at J.B. Winsløws Vej 23, DK-5000 Odense C, and comprises of 2.000 square meters animal housing facilities, laboratories and surgical theatres.
The animal housing facilities are classified for housing gene modified laboratory animals. Moreover a class 2 suite for housing animals treated with class 2 micro organisms is present. Housing of laboratory animals is primarily done in open cages on shelves, but mice can also be housed in individually ventilated cages. The animal housing facility is a low barrier facility with access restriction and coat and shoe change politics.
Facilities are present for sampling and dissection, as well for stationary research equipment necessary for animal studies. A surgery suite with eight working places is available for procedures in small mammals and for micrusurgical training.
Separate facilities for large animals are available for short term housing. The Biomedical Laboratory has a farm at its disposal for long term housing of large animals.
The surgery facilities comprises of two fully equipped surgical suites for experimental surgery or surgical training in large animals. Fluorescence, x-ray and ultrasound facilities are available, as well as on line monitoring of vital parameters.
The laboratory includes a haematology and clinical chemistry laboratory, a cell laboratory, and a bio-image laboratory with micro-CT, fluorescence/luminescence and DEXA scanner for small mammals. The laboratory performs health controls of the animal population as well as analytical service for investigators.
The biomedical Laboratory is part of the Institute for Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, but makes it service available for all within the University of Southern Denmark, Odense University Hospital and regional hospitals on Fynen and Southern Jutland. Assignments for external customers can be performed when capacity allows for this.
