In a year’s time, SDU will be ready to open its new campus in Kolding, which will be bigger and more centrally located
Next year, the University of Southern Denmark in Kolding will move into an unusual building near the city centre.
Recently a topping-out ceremony was held in the heart of the new university building in Kolding: a triangular atrium that spirals down through five floors and spreads natural light from above.
Ideal location
The new university building is an elegant six-floor triangle near the city centre, Kolding river and the School of Design. At the topping-out ceremony, Rector Jens Oddershede celebrated SDU’s ideal new location in the city.
- The new building stands out from other university buildings in many ways. Its construction is unique, and it will make for an energy-efficient university with innovative energy consumption and indoor climate solutions. For example, the building won’t need to be connected to the district heating network, since the indoor climate will be regulated by a cooler pump system that uses groundwater for both heating and cooling, said Jens Oddershede.
Major investments in design
The striking and innovative building was designed by Henning Larsen Architects and will be home to around 1,500 full-time students and 900 part-time students.
SDU in Kolding is significantly boosting its efforts to become the country’s leading education provider in the field of design. As early as this summer, the university will offer design programmes including subjects ranging from IT to entrepreneurship as well as more specifically architectural subjects such as design culture.
