The PhD program must contain five basic elements:
- A research project culminating in a thesis and a public defense action
- Preparation of a PhD thesis on the basis of the PhD project
- Participation in graduate courses (totaling 30 ECTS)
- Participation in active research environments outside of Southern University, preferably through a stay at foreign research institutions (environmental change)
- Teaching or other dissemination of an extent of 300 hours
