Danish students live in either private or rented flats, rooms, or in student halls (kollegium). The University of Southern Denmark primarily arranges accommodation for international students in rooms in student halls. The University of Southern Denmark finds a room for you if you have asked the University to arrange accommodation by sending in the form by our deadline May 1st/November 1st (the deadline for full degree students is June 15th).
Information on your accommodation in Esbjerg is usually sent out in June for the autumn semester and before Christmas for the spring semester. The prices range from DKK 2,200‑2,500 per month. A deposit equivalent to 2 months’ rent is typically charged as well. You pay rent from the day your accommodation is available. The deposit and the first 1½ month’s rent have to be paid within the first week after you arrive. Hereafter you pay rent on a monthly basis.
You do not have to pay the deposit and the first 1½ month’s rent until you have arrived in Esbjerg. We suggest you bring a credit card, travellers’ cheques or cash to cover these first payments. Bills are usually paid at the post office in Denmark. If you plan to pay with credit card,
note that you cannot pay with credit card at the post office. You go to a bank e.g. Danske Bank, Torvet, 6700 Esbjerg.
The rooms provided by the University are furnished. All rooms have access to bathroom, kitchen and laundry facilities. In the kitchen ordinary kitchen utensils are available.
Each room in student halls of residences has the possibility of internet access. You need to contact Arrownet,
www.arrownet.dk for internet access. You receive an application form together with your tenancy agreement in your “Welcome Envelope” which is handed out during the first introduction day.
Notice Master Students have to give written notice to The International Office of the University of Southern Denmark. Exchange Students have a time limited tenancy agreement (spring semester: 15th January – 15th July, autumn semester: 15th August – 15 January). Therefore, exchange students do not have to give notice.
The notice period varies, but is usually 6 weeks.
Those of you renting from a private landlord or subletting have individual terms. The information on payment, notice, inspection and keys does therefore not necessarily apply to you.
Inspection Before you leave your room in the student hall of residence, the janitor (portneren/vicevært) or landlord has to inspect your room to check that nothing has been damaged or needs painting. It is important that you clean the room carefully, otherwise you will be charged for cleaning.
If for some reason your accommodation is not satisfactory on arrival, you should make sure to report it to the janitor within a few days, so that you will not be charged for anything when you leave.
Hints on Finding Accommodation in Esbjerg If you have decided to find accommodation on your own, you can find useful information below on where to go to find a room. Please be aware that it can be difficult to find a room on your own. Most rooms available are without furniture, and it can be quite troublesome to buy furniture, kitchen utensils, etc. when you arrive in a foreign country where you do not speak the language.
