If you plan to study in Denmark for more than three months, you must apply for residence permit. The procedure varies according to citizenship. Visit the Danish Immigration Service for detailed information.
- Non EU/EEA citizens apply and obtain their residence permit before they arrive in Denmark.
- EU/EEA citizens apply at the relevant regional state admininstrations upon arriving in Denmark. More information is sent to you when you are enrolled. Nordic citizens do not apply, but bring along the internordic moving certificate (internordisk flyttebevis) from their municipality if their stay exceeds 6 months.
Application fee for non EU/EEA citizens
Non EU/EEA citizens pay an application fee of DKK 1670 when they apply for residence permit. For more information visit the Danish Immigration Service (www.newtodenmark.dk/fee).
Regarding the application fee for applying for residence permit, you should note that it is common procedure that part of the amount you pay goes to to your bank or credit card as a transaction fee. You must therefore ensure that the amount due to the Danish Immigration Service is paid plus possible transaction fees. At this point it is only possible to pay by an international bank transfer from abroad.
Three steps of payment:
1.Create case order ID
2.Pay the fee by international bank transfer
3.Submit the application
APPLYING FIRST TIME
Non EU/EEA citizens
You apply by submitting the ST1-form we send you with your enrolment pack and by paying the application fee. If you do not need to pay tuition, you must submit documentation that you can support yourself financially (about DKK 54000 per year) instead of documentation of paid tuition fee.
Processing time of application '
The processing of your application is about to 60 days after the Danish Immigration Service has registered receipt of the full application fee and has received a complete application from you. You must pay to apply, so you must apply immediately on receipt of your enrolment pack.
Upon submitting your application for residence permit at the nearest Embassy or Consulate, you are required to submit your fingerprints and have your photo taken for your residence permit card. Please note that the Consulate or Embassy may be located at quite a distance from your home.
How to apply
EU/EEA or Swiss citizens (Nordic citizens excluded)
You apply for a residence certificate/permit as soon as you arrive in Denmark when your stay exceeds three months. It takes between 4-8 weeks to get your residence certificate/permit.
You download and fill out the form “Application for EU-residence document” and apply at the closest Statsforvaltningen Syddanmark. Bring your passport or your identity card, proof of health insurance ( the blue EU health insurance card), 2 passport sized photos and your letter of enrolment.
Please note that in order to qualify for a Danish residence permit, you are required to prove that you have health insurance in your home country. You do this with your blue European health insurance card or other insurance when applying.
Nordic citizens
You do not apply for residence permit, but must bring along the internordic moving certificate (internordisk flyttebevis) if your stay exceeds 6 months. You contact your municipality about this before leaving for Denmark.
Before applying for the residence permit as an EU/EEA or Swiss citizen, please check whether the Regional State Administration comes to the campus of your choice. If so, you need not apply for the residence permit prior to your arrival in Denmark.
EXTENSION OF YOUR RESIDENCE PERMIT
If you extend your studies at the University of Southern Denmark, you must apply for an extension of your residence permit.
EU/EEA citizens apply at the “Statsforvaltning” (the regional state admininstrations). Before you apply, stop by your International Office to get a cover letter documenting your extended enrolment.
Non EU/EEA citizens
It is very important that you apply for renewal before your current residence permit expires. Otherwise you will have to leave Denmark and apply for a new residence permit in your country of origin. See also "Apply on time".
You can file your application with the police two months before the expiration date and no later than one month before.
You apply through the Office for Foreign Nationals (a section of the police). To apply you do as follows:
The Danish Immigration Service or the police station will keep your passport. Before handing in your passport, it is a good idea to write down your passport number and your “foreign national registration number” (udlændingenummer, udl.nr.) indicated on your residence permit in your passport.
Be aware of limited study period.
