Have you spoken Danish at work today?
All international employees at the University of Southern Denmark are offered Danish courses at the University. However, in order to progress significantly in the language, it is also important to take advantage of opportunities for speaking Danish outside the classroom. That can be difficult if English is the everyday working language. Many international employees want to be part of the Danish-speaking community at work, but it is often difficult to get started on speaking Danish, especially if you feel a little insecure about it. The result may be that many international employees never get started on speaking Danish outside the classroom. At the same time, Danish colleagues may be reluctant to force their international colleagues to speak Danish, and they may think that it is easier and quicker to communicate in English. Accordingly SDU has initiated a language buddy programme, which is a way of breaking these habits.
Please feel free to contact language consultant Betina Rohr (betr@sdu.dk) if you would like to know more about the language buddy programme. Betina Rohr will be happy to come by one of your group meetings and very shortly introduce the programme for your group. The aim is not to impose you with extra assignments, but more a question of changing habits, that in the longer run will contribute to the social environment at your work.
