Pursuant to Section 15 (2) of the Ministerial Order on PhD Programmes at the Universities (PhD Order), the Faculty may decide to accept a thesis for assessment without the author having completed the PhD programme, if the faculty assesses that the author has in other ways acquired other comparable qualifications.
An application for the submission and assessment of a PhD thesis must be filed with the Faculty of Engineering pursuant to Section 15 (2) by completing an application form concerning the submission of a PhD thesis that is not preceded by PhD studies. The application form must be enclosed with the PhD project description and include documentation that the applicant has completed the educational elements equivalent to the educational components of the PhD programme, cf. Section 7 (2) of the Ministerial Order on PhD Programmes at the Universities (PhD Order). A chapter from the thesis dealing with theories and methodology must also be enclosed. In order to be considered for assessment by the Faculty of Engineering, it must be possible to categorise the PhD thesis under one of the Faculty of Engineering’s research training programmes.
Applications for the assessment of PhD theses pursuant to Section 15 (2) are to be sent to head of the PhD School via the PhD administration office. Upon receipt of the application, the head of the PhD School will contact the relevant research training programme’s committee for the purpose of an academic assessment of whether the PhD thesis can be considered for assessment. The research training programme’s committee will be requested at the same time to assess whether the applicant has acquired qualifications equivalent to those required by the PhD Order prior to submitting an assessment of a PhD thesis.
If the research training programme’s committee assesses that the PhD thesis may not be accepted for defence, the applicant will be notified of this by the head of the PhD School. The rejection will be appended to the assessment of the research training programme’s committee.
If the appropriate research training programme assesses that the PhD thesis may be accepted for defence, the head of the PhD School will be notified of this by the research training programme’s committee.
The academic assessment will be submitted to the PhD Committee who will approve the administrative enrolment of the applicant with a view to an impending defence, and approve credits for study elements that, pursuant to Section 7 (3) of the PhD Order, are equivalent to the study elements of the PhD programme. The applicant will be associated with one of the Faculty of Engineering’s departments and the relevant research training programme.
The applicant must submit the thesis to the Faculty pursuant to the current rules governing submission of PhD theses for assessment by the Faculty of Engineering. The academic statement of the research training programme’s committee must be enclosed, replacing the statement of the principal supervisor. At the same time, or one month after the submission of the thesis at the latest, the department sends a recommendation for the composition of the assessment committee for approval by the PhD Committee via the PhD administration office.
