The Industrial PhD programme
The Industrial PhD initiative addresses those who hold a degree and are qualified to perform a PhD project. The project requires you
to set up a collaboration with a company that can provide professional support for a three-year industrial research and training project. You can apply for an Industrial PhD project no matter what you are studying at the University of Southern Denmark.

• Thorough knowledge of rules and procedures for the programme established by the Danish Agency for Science Technology and Innovation under the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Higher Education
• To be your support function in the non-academic aspects of the application process
• To contact relevant faculties and departments and set up meetings with relevant academic environments
Purpose
The purpose of the Industrial PhD initiative is:
- to train you as a researcher who has insight into the commercial aspects of research and development
- to build up a personal network for the exchange of knowledge between companies and Danish/foreign research institutions
- to promote the Danish business community’s opportunities for development
Grants
Companies and universities can obtain grants from the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education to cover some of the expenses of taking part in Industrial PhD projects.
The initiative involves a collaboration on a specific development project between the University of Southern Denmark, a graduate (you), a company and possibly also a sector research institute.
Advice
As a PhD student you will be advised by at least two advisers from the University of Southern Denmark and the company in question respectively and possibly also by a third adviser. In certain cases the university can appoint a person who is not employed at the university as your principal adviser, somebody from a sector research institute, for instance. You will be paid by the company throughout the Industrial PhD programme and you will divide your time between the company and the university.
Requirements
There are no requirements connected with your nationality. If the programme is performed at a foreign university, an adviser from a Danish university or a sector research institute must be attached to the project.
