Description:
The purpose of the project is to produce a report on the situation of Open Access in 2012 and specify the requirements for a web-hosted Danish Open Access Barometer which will continuously show the amount of Open Access to research publications from Denmark. A workshop will be held to discuss what to measure and how data should be collected. Participants who have an interest in measuring the development of Open Access to Danish research will be kept up to date by participating in workshops and by access to partial results. The results of this project will be presented eventually at a relevant international conference and also published. The project will have two parallel goals:
- Research, analysis and elaboration of the report “Open Access to Danish research 2012”.
- Development of a specification of requirements for a Danish Open Access barometer.
The purpose is, on the one hand, to comply with the wish for as complete a status as possible of Open Access to research from Denmark in 2012, and, on the other, to develop an Open Access Barometer which will continuously and automatically show the status of Open Access to research publications from Denmark.

Start date: October 2012
End date: June 2012
Description: Homework online for primary school pupils provides the basis for a small pilot project which aims at testing this concept in relation to upper secondary school students.
The project is supported by DEFF (Denmark’s Electronic Research Library) and will last until August 2012. The pilot project is aimed at testing the coaching of students in science, i.e. mathematics, physics and chemistry. Four upper secondary schools participate in this pilot project, and the coaching will begin in January 2013.
Testing the relevance of online coaching for upper secondary school students is an important aspect of this pilot project and if it proves a success, it will be determined whether coaching of upper secondary school students can be introduced more widely.
Name: Legal education by library-assisted distance learning
Responsible: Ole Hammerslev (Department of Law, University of Southern Denmark) and Bente Krogh Hansen (University Library of Southern Denmark)
Participants: University teachers (Department of Law) and Bente Krogh Hansen, Astrid Jacobsen, Hanne Danielsen, Jens Dam (University Library of Southern Denmark)
Start date: May 2012
End date:
Description: In co-operation with the Department of Law, a method of distance-only learning will be developed for the library’s legal resources for the subjects of legal method and constitutional law. The establishment of a law study by distance learning in the autumn of 2012 has made it necessary to reorganize and improve the instruction which the library is responsible for on the subjects of legal method and constitutional law, which are obligatory for the bachelor’s degree. Distance-only learning in relation to library instruction is a novelty, and therefore both the teaching materials and the instruction must be altered.
In the spring of 2012, the participants of the library will determine how to organize the instruction which the library will provide in co-operation with Ole Hammerslev.
The teaching materials will be developed by Bente Krogh Hansen, Hanne Danielsen, and Astrid Jacobsen.
A case based on existing laws will serve as the starting point of the instruction. Previously, the parental responsibility act has been used for this purpose.
The instruction which the library will provide will be a combination of a synchronous and an asynchronous part.
The asynchronous part will consist of various components arranged in such a way that the students can read documents and watch various videos when it suits them.
A number of small guides for the relevant resources will be produced.
Short Camtasia videos demonstrating how to use the key resources will be produced.
Assignments either in the form of tests or contributions to a wiki will be produced.
Besides the asynchronous part, guidance sessions at fixed hours will be arranged via Connect, so that students can ask for help with the assignments related to both the library resources and to their subject.

Name: DEFF project: Supplementary training of upper secondary school teachers on information literacy
Responsible: Thomas Kaarsted (University Library of Southern Denmark) and Associate Professor Michael Paulsen (IFPR)
Participants: DEFF (Denmark’s Electronic Research Library), Institute of Philosophy, Education and Study of Religions, University of Southern Denmark, Thisted Gymnasium and University Library of Southern Denmark
Start date: January 2012
End date: Spring 2013
Description: A course for upper secondary school teachers on information literacy or digital competence will be developed and tested on the basis of former activities carried out by DEFF and recent research.
The starting point is the educational programs of The Ministry of Children and Education. These programs describe, subject by subject, how information technology can become a meaningful component of education. Recent research shows that pupils, to a large extent, do not know how to use new electronic tools until teachers draw their attention to them. In that way, the teaching profession is undergoing a transformation, and information technology didactics and/or didactics 2.0 become key concepts.
Ultimately, the overall object is to make the students more competent to locate, evaluate, organize, produce, present and share information in co-operation with their fellow students and teachers. At upper secondary level, this takes place in a sporadic and fragmented manner. Consequently, the outcome of the project must be a concept which specifies how to make the use of digital tools and information literacy a part of the teaching. In addition, the project must give instructions on making this a part of the professional postgraduate teacher training for upper secondary school teachers, or be otherwise formalized.
The project is a co-operation between the Department for the Study of Culture (IKV, University of Southern Denmark) which is responsible for the professional postgraduate teacher training for upper secondary school teachers, and the University Library of Southern Denmark along with other relevant collaborators from the library sector. Testing the concept in co-operation with selected upper secondary schools in the autumn of 2012 and the spring of 2013 is the objective. Roughly 40 upper secondary school teachers will participate.
By the end of 2012, the first courses have been successfully completed. The project progresses according to plan.
Name: DEFF project: Publishing strategies. Assisting in the development of a publishing strategy for researchers.

Participants: Aarhus University Library, DEFF (Denmark’s Electronic Research Library), DTU Library, CULIS (Copenhagen University Library Service), Roskilde University Library, Statsbiblioteket, University Library of Southern Denmark, VIA University College Libraries, Aalborg University Library
Start date: January 2012
End date: December 2012
Description: Publishing strategies. Assisting in the development of a publishing strategy for researchers.
The purpose of this project is to establish, define, and develop the competences and tools of libraries in order for them to be able to offer assistance in the development of a publishing strategy for researchers. The libraries possess a number of competences in the field which can be put into practice and be useful in the co-operation with researchers.
The project is to improve the libraries’ ability to offer competences and tools which can support the publishing of the research of universities and colleges. Differences in ways of publishing in various fields is to be taken in consideration. The product of the project will relate to general competences and tools which are applicable to all kinds of subjects.
The project deals with the strategic approach to both alternative and traditional publishing channels, and aims at enabling alternative ways of publishing to prepare the way for publishing in e.g. highly prestigious academic journals.
Name: Lib-support. Library-assisted development of student research and information competences.
Responsible: Anne Marie Mosbech and Henrik Bregnhøj.
Participants: Department of International Health, Immunology and Microbiology (University of Copenhagen), Faculty Library of Natural and Health Sciences, Institute of Public Health – Health Promotion (University of Southern Denmark Esbjerg), University Library of Southern Denmark, Mosbech Kommunikation
Start date: Autumn 2012
End date: Summer 2013
Description: According to several surveys, teachers spend a large amount of time guiding students on general subjects. At the Faculties of Health Sciences of the University of Copenhagen and the University of Southern Denmark, tools which can qualify both Danish and foreign students to reflect and work in a scholarly way are lacking. Lib-support is a remedy for this situation, as it develops the students’ research and information competence both at the beginning of the process of writing their MA thesis and in their preparations for discussing with supervisers.
This is a scholarly tool which gives users a concrete result, such as a suggestion for a MA thesis. Lib-support is an online tool, which connects each student’s own writing process to the efficient use of existing library resources and short computer-assisted learning modules. The programme will be a separate application written in English, and a guide will describe in detail how versions of it can be developed for fields other than the health sciences. It will combine a platform of resources, a learning site and a step-by-step guide on how to write. Assignments and exercises are also applicable to other research related tasks than the MA thesis and can be used in a modular system of teaching.
