My research and teaching take a predominantly qualitative approach to the disciplines of economic geography and international business.
In respect of economic geography my focal point is the facilitation and orchestration of diverse types of agglomerations, such as networks, clusters, and national/regional innovation systems. Clusters such as Silicon Valley and BioValley are highlighted for their entrepreneurial and innovative milieu and their high productivity. My current research focuses on how these benefits are achieved, through which type of facilitation, and by whom. The starting point for my research is several studies and surveys of Danish clusters.
Keywords: Cluster facilitation, cluster policy and strategy, cluster development.
The second area of my research concentrates on in-/outsourcing and offshoring of business activities approached from an international business perspective. Here, the focus is on dynamic location advantages and knowledge sourcing by firms, before a relocation of their activities. Outsourcing and offshoring have become very familiar concepts in Denmark and the rest of the western world. First production activities and later service and administrative activities were moved in order to take advantage of cheap resources and/or market access. However, what happens when these incentives for relocation change and perhaps become a disadvantage over time, and does this influence how firms prepare for future outsourcings or offshorings?
Keywords: In-/Outsourcing, offshoring, dynamic location advantages, knowledge sourcing.
My research is published in international research journals and in edited book volumes (see my publication list). Alongside the research, I also participate in knowledge transfer activities and external projects for governments and consultancy firms (see my activity list).
All these different activities happen in close co-operation with my colleagues at the Department of Entrepreneurship and Relationship Management at the University of Southern Denmark and with researchers from abroad, for example from Stockholm School of Economics (Sweden), Flensburg University (Germany) and Ulster University (Northern Ireland).
