The Institute's three main research areas are Antiquity, Modern History, and Danish History.
The Institute of History and Civilization is responsible for a wide range of research programmes in many different departments in the Faculty.

- Centre of Cold War Studies
- Centre for Maritime and Regional Studies
- Centre for Contemporary Middle East Studies
- Centre for Medieval Studies
- Centre for Tourism, Innovation and Culture
- Centre for Welfare State Research
The institute is also responsible for the teaching programmes of History, Contemporary Middle East Studies, American Studies, Classical Studies, and Maritime Archaeology besides the disciplines of History and Social Science at the language and M.Sc. programmes.
The employees are active in national and international networks, and likewise, research is published regularly in national and international journals.
