Annual ESPAnet Conference 2010
“Social Policy and the Global Crisis: Consequences and Responses”
Budapest, 2-4 September 2010
The organising committee for the 2010 ESPAnet Annual Conference invites expressions of interest from colleagues willing to act as stream convenors.
Conference Theme:
The theme of ESPAnet’s 2010 Annual Conference is the social consequences of the global financial crisis and their differential impacts across Europe. The main questions for consideration include:
How is the crisis affecting already existing inequalities? How are different social classes and groups, especially those in poverty, affected by the crisis? What are the adaptable capacities of the different “worlds of welfare”? Does the intensifying social vulnerability lead to the re-structuring of the programs to provide more security? How far have new programs been developed, and how far have new questions of social policy and welfare been opened up by the crisis?
We would like to broaden the horizon of social policy analysis and see global environmental concerns taken into account: How far are responses to the crisis re-thinking the role of the national and international/global state and the role of the European Union in creating economically, socially and environmentally sustainable societies?
Responsibilities of Stream Convenors:
- Stream convenors are responsible for one or more sessions organised within a particular stream. The total number of sessions per stream will depend on the number of abstracts accepted. In total, we anticipate between 15 and 20 streams.
- Stream convenors participate in the selection of abstracts, ranking all abstracts submitted for their respective stream. The review of abstracts will be organised after the closure of the call for abstracts, i.e. during the second half of March/early April 2010.
- Final decisions on the number of sessions per stream and the acceptance of abstracts will be made by the local organising committee after full information concerning streams is available.
- In the run-up to the Conference, stream convenors together with local organisers supervise the deadlines for paper submission and review the situation concerning contributed papers in case deadlines are not met.
- In the Conference, Stream convenors chair their respective session(s). To guarantee coherence across sessions, they are also asked to a) give either an introductory presentation on the theme of their stream and show how the papers chosen for presentation fit the research in this area, or b) synthesise the stream’s output after paper presentations.
Stream Themes:
As organisers, we invite and give priority to suggestions for streams that fit the overall theme of the conference. Over the years, ESPAnet Conferences have had many different streams, some with established continuity. Suggested themes for the Budapest Conference are listed below. Please note that:
- Proposals for stream titles may differ from the stream themes listed, but suggestions should bear in mind that topics should appeal to a large number of researchers, allow submissions from different disciplinary backgrounds and countries and that all streams and sessions have to be organised as open streams and sessions.
- Stream convenors themselves shall not submit abstracts to their respective stream.
- Only one abstract submission per researcher is allowed across the conference as a whole.
- All streams and sessions have to be organised as open streams and sessions. No session shall be limited to members of an existing project network.
