Using historical experiments for science teaching
The use of the history of science has been advocated in the context of science education for quite some time. However, most traditional approaches focus on the use of either anecdotes or narratives, thus forming an addendum to the traditional scientific curriculum. More recent approaches advocate the use of stories or role plays in order to develop a situation that requires some inquiry by the students, thus enabling them to participate actively in the course. A different approach advocates the use of (reconstructed) historical experiments. This enables students both on school as well as on university level to develop an understanding of the historical process of knowledge generation both on the experimental as well as on the contextual level. In the first part of the presentation some basic aspects of such an approach will be discuss. In the second part, some examples of how such an approach can be implemented will be described. In this part, also experiences made with these applications will be discussed.
