Svensk statsborger.
Videnskabeligt arbejde:
I ”Antibiografiske biografier.

Evaluation
William Richard Miller’s main interest is addiction, motivation for change, self-regulation and cognitive-behaviour therapies. However, he spans widely and also has a strong interest in psychology and religion, professional training, and dissemination of evidence-based treatments
He founded the method of Motivational interviewing and together with Stephen Rollnick co-authored the book ”Motivational Interviewing: Preparing People to Change Addictive Behaviour”. This book made an exceptional impression on the scientific audience and clinical staffs in many areas of psychology and medicine and dramatically changed the way patients are met by professionals, and in particular the way we perceive persons with an addiction (and other diseases and conditions) and the potential for change.
He also made the point that not all addictions are severe and short interventions are appropriate for many patients. He has demonstrated that active and empathic therapy (i.e. motivational interviewing) is more effective than confrontational therapy. He has developed self-control training programs
Thus, he has had a major impact on our understanding especially of addictive behaviour in general and alcohol addiction in particular.
William Richard Miller’s field of interest and talents are wide-ranging and broad and include writing poetry, music and authoring educational videos. He is still continues to teach and inspire professionals in the field of addiction and motivational psychology.

Among his scientific awards includes an Honorary Doctorate at the Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland.
Key-research areas of Prof. Seidel Morgenstern and plans for future cooperation
The research group of Physical and Chemical Foundations of Process Engineering (PCFPE) at the Max Planck Institute headed by Prof. Seidel-Morgenstern has been conducting research in several key research areas in chemical engineering, including crystallization, hybrid separation process design, preparative chromatography, and reactor design concept, which are also some of the key research areas at the Institute of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology (KBM) at the Faculty of Engineering, SDU. Prof. Seidel-Morgenstern has made a significant contribution to the development of hybrid separation methods and especially his work within the separation of enantiomers using a combination of crystallization and chromatography as described in several of his papers (see attached publications list of Prof. Seidel-Morgenstern, e.g., Org. Res. Process Develop. 16, 331-342 (2012); Chirality 23, 118-127 (2011); J. Pharm. Sci. 99, 1762-1773 (2010); Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 48, 11148-11157 (2009); Chirality 21, 728-737 (2009); Chem. Eng. Sci. 64, 2473-2482 (2009); AIChE Journal 55, 640-649 (2009); J. Chromatogr. A 1215, 133-144 (2008); Chem. Eng. Sci. 63, 1282-1292 (2008); Chem. Eng. Res. Design 85, 928-936 (2007); J. Sep. Sci. 29, 1447-1457 (2006); J. Chromatogr. A 1092, 43-54 (2005)) is outstanding. This is a new and interesting field of research that may find use in various industrial processes for the separation and isolation of target compounds from a complex mixture. The work of Prof. Seidel-Morgenstern has for example inspired KBM to initiate research within the development of hybrid separation methods for the isolation of selected pharmaceuticals from plant extracts. Also his research within membrane reactors and fixed bed reactors in combination with heterogeneous catalysis to improve separation, selectivity and yield of selected reaction products is an important part of Prof. Seidel-Morgensterns research that has many industrial applications (see attached publications list of Prof. Seidel-Morgenstern, e.g., Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 50, 12895-12903 (2011); Chem. Eng. J. 168, 861-871 (2011); Eng. Technol. 32, 1326-1338 (2009); Chem. Eng. Res. Design 86, 753-764 (2008); Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 46, 2286-2294 (2007); Applied Catalysis A: General 257, 193-199 (2004); Chem. Eng. Res. Design 82, 236-244 (2004); Chem. Eng. Sci. 54, 1447-1453 (1999)). We have been in contact with Prof. Seidel-Morgenstern concerning a close cooperation on the above mentioned research areas and has come to the conclusion that such cooperation would be beneficial for both research groups/institutes. One of our ambitions at KBM is to reach a top international level within crystallization and hybrid separation process design and related research areas within the next five years and cooperation with PCFPE could be very helpful to fulfil this ambition. Further details for cooperation between KBM and PCFPE are described below:
• Hybrid separation process design:
The on-going research on this topic in KBM is focusing on the systematic design and development of chromatography-crystallization hybrid separation process for the isolation and purification of active pharmaceutical substances from plants. The research activities in KBM involve the molecular level characterization of the complex plant extracts and the modeling and design of the hybrid separation process. The research in the PCFPE group is particularly on separation of enantiomeric mixtures with coupled-crystallizer, chromatography-crystallization hybrid processes. The research in each group has unique objectives, while the two groups share common fundamental theory and design concept and methodology for hybrid separation processes. Therefore, the visiting of PhD students between the two research units will enable the knowledge exchange between the researchers and thus to promote the research at both institutes.
• Crystallization of pharmaceutical ingredients:
Both PCFPE and KBM are carrying out research on crystallization of pharmaceutical ingredients. The research in both groups emphasizes the optimization and control of the crystallization process in terms of the desired molecular level solid structure of the pharmaceutical products. The PCFPE group is specially focusing on chiral systems, while the research in KBM has been specially emphasizing crystallization and solid-phase transformation of pharmaceutical salts, polymorphs and anhydrate/hydrate. The future collaboration between PCFPE and KBM will allow the exchange of the fundamental knowledge on the solid-liquid equilibriums of the multi-phase systems and also the ideas on process simulation and modeling. This will possibly lead to synergetic combination of the expertise, and thus will enable the advances of the research on crystallization in both research groups.
In addition, formulating networks in the separation and pharmaceutical engineering areas between the two research groups and other possible partners will potentially promote the possibility of participating in a consortium project in connection with The EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (Horizon 2020).
Conclusions:
The scientific records of Prof. Seidel-Morgenstern with over 300 publications published in peer-reviewed journals, several monographs and editorships, book chapters, and over 400 conference proceedings and abstracts as well as 7 patents or patent applications is impressive and witness of an extremely active researcher, and there is no doubt that Prof. Seidel-Morgenstern’s is one of the leading researchers within chemical engineering. Furthermore, the originality of his research is remarkable; in particular, his research within hybrid separation methods using a combination of crystallization and chromatography is outstanding, which have many industrial applications for the production of pharmaceuticals and other chemicals from complex mixtures. Thus, it is no surprise that Prof. Seidel-Morgenstern has received several scientific awards based on his scientific merits, which also include an Honorary Doctorate from the Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland. In conclusion, the evaluation committee therefore highly recommend that Prof. Seidel-Morgenstern is awarded an Honorary Doctorate at the University of Southern Denmark.
